Hello everyone, I hope you’re having a wonderful spring. Welcome to our District video news! We have a lot going on right now, so let’s get right in to it.
We are so proud to be cutting the ribbon on the new classroom building at Gault Elementary. This new permanent building replaces obsolete portables with modernized learning spaces ALL THANKS TO YOU and Measure B passed in 2016—-we cannot build, repair or modernize any other way than with bonds passed by our community and so we’re thrilled to be showcasing this new building to the public on Saturday at 11:15 at Gault School during the Gault community’s pancake breakfast. Guelaguetza is this weekend! This sprawling Oaxacan cultural festival features food, goods, music and dance performances, activities, pageantry and just a lot of fun. All are welcome, admission is $10 and it will be at Branciforte Small Schools on Sunday from 10am til 4pm. It’s put on by our great friends at Senderos, and you can learn more about the amazing local tradition at scsenderos.org!
We wanted to update the community regarding the district’s purchase of the Pacific Cultural Center on Seabright and Broadway after it had been up for sale for years by the Hunaman Fellowship. The district’s hope for the site is a meeting space for professional development for our teachers and staff and community events. It’s worth noting that any of our spaces can be rented and used by community organizations, and this one will be available as well.
We are currently working with structural engineers to see if the building will meet the strict code for any place that will house teachers and students. That will tell us if it can be retrofitted and brought up to meet structural requirements.
If that is unfeasible, the plan is to replace the current building with a building of similar footprint to house large meetings and community events. The purchase was made possible to do state reimbursement funds of some bond projects, which provided funding that had to be spent on facilities. The other need fulfilled by this purchase is the fact that the lot already has parking and a drive-through corridor to help alleviate the traffic issues at Gault during drop off and pickup—-Gault is our only school with no dedicated parking for staff or parents.

We are accepting applications for Student Trustees! All current 10th and 11th grade students are able to apply to represent their school and peers on our board of trustees. It is a 2-3 hour per week requirement, and will provide A-G elective credit. Looks great on a college application and all you’ve to do to apply is send a letter of interest and 1 teacher recommendation to [email protected].
There is a Teen Job training workshop coming up a week from Saturday on April 20th at London Nelson downtown at 10am where teens can learn about writing resumes, conducting and more - you need to register right here.
In May, district nurses and local healthcare partners are putting on a sports physical day. The event is at Harbor High at 3pm on Wednesday, May 15th and it aims to do even more than get kids cleared for sports, but provide a lots of health information and baseline tests to promote the health of the whole student—with support from physical therapists, cardiologists, pediatricians, orthopedic surgeons and more. We’ll be sending out more info on that in the coming weeks.
I also wanted to provide an update on our workforce housing project. The district has hired partners for the project, headed by local construction firm Bogard with architects EhDD and Studio Vara out of the Bay Area. The project, with a scope of approximately 100 units at 313 Swift Street in the currently vacant lot between Gateway School and Cafe Iveta. This development will be open to both teachers and support staff, and the hope is to have its doors open by June of 2027.
